Train Days & Rail Recreation - An Evolving Hobby

Rail Recreation - An Evolving Hobby

“It's easy to mock model railway enthusiasts as the dull cousin of train spotters, but the truth is that attics and spare rooms across the nation are filled with small buildings and model engines.”

Model railway interest seems to be transcending generations. It’s shared, collected and coveted. It’s creating a world that challenges creativity but offers pure satisfaction unlike anything else. In most cases, it’s passion is passed into the next generation.

Garden Railroaders

Today’s train enthusiasts might surprise you as they are not a stereo type. You may also be surprised to learn that model railways are also known as one of the fastest growing hobbies, whether it’s indoors or in a garden. The significance of railways and gardens in Canada dates back to when Canada was struggling to connect East with West.

In fact, it was the railroads that brought horticulture to major train stations to prove to arriving immigrants that the land in the West was fertile. Beautiful gardens and parks were created by CPR agents turned horticulturists. “By 1912, these gardens numbered close to 1500 and the CPR was operating greenhouses at every major centre.”

For years, the Rocky Mountain Garden Railroaders having been setting up G-scale model railway displays in the Aspen Crossing greenhouse, capturing the interest of would be hobbyists, showing families that there is something to share together.

According to Rocky Mountain Garden Railroaders President, Jeffrey Burk, “We are open to new members whether they have a train or not. Our prime concern is to have fun and promote the hobby of railroading. Some of our members have track in their garage, some out in the garden, some running around the roof of their basement, and some just like to scratch build buildings. We are a very versatile group and generally have a lot of fun.” (National Model Railway Association)

A Very Distinguishing Hobby

Walt Disney had a love of trains that extended throughout his lifetime, both professionally and privately. The concept of Mickey Mouse was conceived aboard a train!

Would you ever suspect a super rock star such as Rod Stewart to be linked to model railways? Other notable rocker rail fans are Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and Roger Daltry. The allure of silver rails has reflected a passion of trains for Ol’ blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra; Johnny Cash to Neil Young and many more. Model railroaders are on track when it comes to ribbons of steel!
