Aspen Crossing Dinner Theatre Presents - The Colonists’ Train

The When

It’s early 1900’s and Canada is a very young country that needs to grow. Enter, the Colonist Cars.

Brochures and posters were created to entice Europeans and Americans to consider Canada as a new and wonderful place to live. This must have looked wonderful to the land-poor of Europe.

The Why

Over 3.5 million left their homes for Canada when they read of free land, clean air and wide-open spaces. Those who arrived by ship at Halifax’s Pier 21 must have had vision of the gentle farmlands of their homes. Loaded on one of 1000 Colonist Cars, they must have been shocked by the harsh reality of the prairies in winter, but many were too poor or too proud to return to the old country. And many realized it was too dangerous to return home. What was a man to do in 1923 with a family to support? What would he do? Anything.

The Expectation

With rich characters steeped with trials and tribulations, there’s danger, mystery, grief, money and greed; the usual ingredients that make up this mischievous dinner theatre offering!
