Father and Son: True Foamers on Rails
In celebrating Father’s Day and our 12th Annual Train Days, we’d like to introduce you to two Foamers that have 3 generations of train engineering. You might say that, silver rails run deep in their family history.
The picture below shows son Lonnie on the left with his Dad Blaine on the right. Both father and son were a part of the Aspen Crossing Inaugural run on May 15, 2015. Blaine was the engineer that day while Lonnie was his “assistant”. Now over a year later Father and Son are back again but in reversed roles. This time Lonnie will be the engineer, while Blaine will be supervising.
Lonnie’s knowledge of trains may have been inherited through his grandfather and father, but his love of trains is purely his own.
“My love of trains came at an early age and never went away. My dad was a locomotive engineer for CN in Edmonton and worked there from 1974 until his retirement in 2007. Since 2009, he has run trains for the Battle River Railway out of Forestburg. He has been a qualified engineer since 1978.
As far back as I remember he would take me on trips with him and ride in the cab and I couldn’t get enough. My grandfather Norman McGowan was also an engineer with CN in Edmonton and worked as such from 1948-1978 when he passed away. He was one of several people that trained my dad and having the opportunity to have him train me is amazing. I am not working on the railroad as a third generation McGowan, so this is a great way to be able to be trained from my dad and have the opportunity to work with him on the railroad. It means a great deal to me.
I met Jason at a G scale dinner in December of 2013 and helped him wherever I could over the last couple years as my end goal was to be able to operate the train and better yet, work with and be trained by my dad. The opportunity to work with him on Father’s Day is very fitting for me and I am excited to do so.”
And we here at Aspen Crossing are very excited to continue with the Trainiest weekend of the year by presenting our annual Train Days.
