A Father's Story

June 17, 2015

Father’s Day is fast approaching and that means that many of us may be reflecting upon our special fond memories of our Dad’s. Most of us have a treasure of stored memories that we carry with us, and as the years go by, those memories become more precious to us.

This year, we’d like to share a very special story about Aspen Crossing’s owner, Jason Thornhill and his Dad, Bill. In fact, it was Bill that shared this treasured experience for this story!

Aspen Crossing came about being a train themed destination by pure osmosis. It wasn’t until Jason went to University to study horticulture where he learned about the pivotal role the railways and horticulture played in drawing settlers to the western prairies. Since Jason planned on creating his own garden centre, he then realized that tying into the railway theme made perfect sense. So in 2005 he built a replica CPR Station #5 gift store to join the greenhouse garden centre.

One day an opportunity came about to purchase an actual rail car. So Jason said to his Dad, “Let’s go shopping.” Bill wasn’t quite sure what they were shopping for until they arrived at their destination. The shopping trip turned out to be a rather unique adventure, resulting in the successful purchase of an 1887 Pullman railcar that was steeped in history. This particular railcar was one of a few that Prime Minister John Diefenbaker had used as his business car in the mid 1950’s. It then went on to be the Side Track Cafe in Edmonton AB, a pub that was famous for its live music and featured a lot of up and coming Canadian music talent. The railcar is now a unique dining experience, known as the Aspen Crossing dining car.

So there’s a little bit of history on how Aspen Crossing began to evolve as a train themed tourist destination. A father and son shopping trip is just one of the many instances in the evolution process!

Why not treat your Dad to a unique and fun experience this Father’s Day, by coming out to enjoy our 11th annual Train Days weekend, June 20th & 21st. There’s a brunch both days in the dining car, pancake breakfast outdoors. Check out the greenhouse that will be featuring model trains by Rocky Mountain Garden Railway Club. The gang from the Guns of the Golden West will also be on hand to demonstrate their shooting skills. And last but not least, the Aspen Crossing Railway will be running short one hour excursions to enjoy. So don’t worry about what tie to get Dad this Father’s Day, give him an experience you’ll all remember and treasure for years to come!
